These training methods are very progressive and can be easily learned after you have completed at least 3 months of fundamental training (sometimes sooner!). The fundamental training techniques that I teach are similar to those outlined in the best selling book, Body-for-LIFE by Bill Phillips. This book--200+ self-turning pages of inspiration, motivation and education--is required reading for you to get started.

My functional dumbbell training program has been inspired by Juan Carlos Santana, M.Ed., of Optimum Performance Institute, Boca Raton, Florida.  Functional training totally breaks the bonds of traditionalism with a revolutionary concept integrating multi-muscle moves for maximal exercise efficiency.

JC Santana's techniques improve functional performance and are based on cutting edge methodology supported by scientific proof. Although the term "performance enhancement" has traditionally been associated with athletics, this concept includes all aspects of human performance.  Performance enhancement includes all of the qualities associated with the complete human experience; from a recovering stroke patient and an elite athlete, the goal remains the same: to improve current levels of performance and achieve their full performance potential.

More and more traditionalist fitness professionals are going to be incorporating this new exciting approach to conditioning into traditional strength and fitness programs. This approach is so incredibly cutting edge in the fitness industry that JC Santana is featured as a key presenter at the World Fitness IDEA Conference!

When I started the Body for Life program. I was wearing size 13/14 jeans. I had always been a size 5/6 except during and after pregnancies, but was able to quickly lose whatever weight I had gained after each of my three children's births. When I married my second husband, I was usually a 5/6 but found my weight rise after combining our families (6 children that we have all the time). My husband travels extensively and so I shouldered the burden of the household duties. I found little time for myself and soon saw the impact on my body and my emotional state. In a year and a half I went from size 5/6 to 13/14. Before discovering Body for Life, I was so depressed and had so little energy that I would often seclude myself in my locked bedroom and sleep or sob. Climbing stairs or picking up my 3 year old took tremendous effort. I didn't want to go out in public, I loathed myself and my life.

The biggest step for me was to actually go into the gym. I was humiliated by my appearance and felt completely out of place. What I found instead was that there were a lot of other imperfect people that even provided support in my effort to re-gain my wholeness. Within two weeks, I saw muscle develop that I had never seen before. Within 7 weeks I dropped from a size 13/14 to size 7/8. By the end of the 3 months, I was size 5/6 and quite confident in a bikini! It's been almost a year. I still weight train and even though I have had 3 cancer surgeries and continue with my busy schedule, I have maintained my goal. I have energy and desire to be in life to such a degree now that I have since taken up Tae kwon do, skiing, roller-blading, hiking, repelling and scuba diving! Debra and Body for Life may not have saved my life, but they saved my quality of life. I don't even know who that person was a year ago that wouldn't go into the gym out of embarrassment and laid in bed all day trying to sleep her life away.
